Hoists

A specially designed hoist may be required to transfer a disabled person from a chair into a bath or onto a toilet. Choosing the correct system to suit both the patient and carer is essential. Several hoist designs and systems are available and some are suitable than others for use in domestic premises.

Ceiling hoists
These may be fixed-position or adjustable. Overhead ceiling hoists use no floor space and eliminate the need for storage. Ceiling fixed hoists are easier to use than floor fixed hoists which may be difficult to manoeuvre on carpeting. But they may be restrictive for use in domestic premises.

Floor hoists
Floor lift hoists are better suited for use in the domestic environment. Electric and hydraulic units are available.

Wall hoist
A wall hoist is inexpensive, versatile and easy to install. The lift can be made portable with the use of additional wall brackets and is particularly useful in bathrooms where space can be at a premium. In domestic premises it is essential that the wall to which the hoist is fixed can support it.

Dedicated Bath lifts and seats
For users who don't require assistance once they are in the bath, a fixed height bath with a bath lift or seat may be a practical solution. The seat may be an integral part of the bath, where the seat is also water powered, or it may be a separate unit which simply rests in the bottom of the bath. (The bath should be of such a construction to take the extra weight).

Bath lifts which sit in the bath are convenient for domestic use since they can be completely removed when not required. Storage space will of course be required.
